Reflections on Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem
By ACAS | 29 May 2009
Pambazuka News has a series of articles remembering the life and works of Dr Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem.
Born in Nigeria in 1961, Tajudeen Abdul-Raheem was a Rhodes Scholar, obtaining a Doctorate from Oxford. A prolific author and critic, he became an important voice for pan-Africanism. Dr. Abdul-Raheem died in Nairobi in a car accident in May.
Upon receiving the news, Firoze Manji wrote,
25 May is Africa Liberation Day. What a day to be woken in the early hours of the morning with the terrible news that one of the leading proponents of Africa’s liberation – Tajudeen Abdul Raheem should be so tragically lost in a senseless car accident in Nairobi. Messages have been pouring in from across the world as we all fail to hold back our tears at this loss.
Over 200 people commented on that post, providing their own reflections on Tajudeen. Some of them have been summarized here.
Here you can read some of the best of Dr. Abul Raheem’s Postcards.
KPFA’s Africa Today spoke with Prof David Johnson (CUNY) about Tajudeen this week. Listen here or download the file here. The segment on Tajudeen starts around 33 minutes into the program.
